Parramatta park is a must see for visitors to sydney. Don't miss australia day on 26 january when all are welcome to a grand all day celebration of being australian. Parramatta park cafe, located down by the river is child and dog friendly, serves excellent food and coffee and is open 8am to 3pm daily. Check out the park's web site for booking information and other events and festivals. Also on offer is a free tour of the park hosted by the park's knowledgeable director, and for those interested in natural history are ranger led tours discovering wildlife. History enthusiasts will want to take the curator's tour of the convict built, eighteenth century dairy building. Tucked in beside the macquarie street entrance is a large formal rose garden which contains a rare collection of heritage and species roses. The park's circuit road is used for road training by cyclists including a dedicated triathlon club and runners. Ever since then the parklands have been parramatta's backyard, a place where the community meets for family picnics, sports, cycling with the kids and walking the dog. There are two fun playgrounds and kids can ride safely on the sealed off-road area. Following a determined public campaign, the area was gazetted a people's park in 1858. The parklands were too attractive to be reserved for subsistence cropping for long and were used by successive governors as a respite from the stresses of running a very large open air prison. Colonists convict and free, were first successful in growing sufficient food to feed themselves here. If you are interested in australian history then you will already know about this national heritage listed park. The day starts with massed hot air balloon carnivale at 6am and culminates with a rock concert and fireworks display into the night.
